Running a half-marathon?! NEVER! That was always my response. I hate running. While my sister has always been an active runner, I have never found the sweat, sore legs, and time commitment appealing.

How things change! As I continue to support those with cancer and help spread the message about how to prevent cancer, I can't help but notice that I am often a hypocrite. Stay active, I tell others. Live a healthy lifestyle! In deciding to run the Cap City Half-Marathon, I have committed myself to a healthier lifestyle, the type of lifestyle in which cancer is less likely. While there is no way to 100% prevent cancer, there are mnay ways to lower your risk. That is what I am doing here.

I am also running to raise money and spread the word about a cause very dear to me. As a volunteer LIVESTRONG Leader, it is my mission to help spread the message and resources of LIVESTRONG in the central Ohio area. The Foundation serves people affected by cancer and empowers them to take action against this horrible disease that is now the world's leading cause of death.  LIVESTRONG has become a symbol of hope and inspiration to people affected by cancer around the world.

The money I raise will go to support programs and services for cancer survivors.  If you or someone you know is diagnosed, these resources will help face the challenges of cancer, head on, and live life on your own terms.  Please visit LIVESTRONG.org/GetHelp or contact me at vonck.4@osu.edu to learn more about living with cancer.

Finally, I run to remember Karen Vonck, my mother who passed away nearly six years ago. I think about her every single day. I will cross the finish line for her. Please join me!
