This year, I will be joining the fight as part of Team LIVESTRONG, which continues to make a difference in the fight against cancer each and every day. I join the others participating in this event in order to raise funds on behalf LIVESTRONG's cause. LIVESTRONG serves those people and their families who are affected by cancer to help empower them to take action against this disease that is now the world's leading cause of death.
For a bit of personal background, I am a 25 year old Long Island native - born and raised. I attended Fairfield University in CT and currently work at PricewaterhouseCoopers in the firm's assurance practice. While having tackled the half marathon distance before, this upcoming event in November will be my first full marathon. While there are a number of great charities out there, I have always felt a close affinity to this organization in particular.
I am sure that every one of you knows someone who has been affected by cancer, which is one of the main reasons why I decided to get involved. I have always felt a close connection with this organization since I bought my first yellow bracelet back in high school. My mother, who is approaching her 30th year as a healthcare professional, began her career working in cancer research at Sloan Kettering and has spent the last 15 years as an oncology nurse for a Long Island hospital. From her we would hear stories of the ups and downs experienced by so many patients and their families over the years. My mother has fought this fight for most of her career, and certainly serves as an inspiration of strength for me to try and make whatever difference I can.
As many of you know, LIVESTRONG has had a tough year in the news, which also provided some inspiration for my decision. This past fall, LIVESTRONG saw its well-known founder step down from his position with the foundation amidst the controversy surrounding his career. Most recently in the news as well, Nike has announced its intention of ending its long-lasting partnership with LIVESTRONG. If you ask my family and close friends, some of the negative press that LIVESTRONG has received from these events has certainly fueled a fire with me. LIVESTRONG is more than one man's actions. It is a community and symbol of hope and inspiration to all people affected by cancer around the world, and that has not changed despite this year's headlines - regardless of anyone's personal views on its founder.
All money I raise will go to support cancer programs and services. For example, I know that at the hospital where my mother works, LIVESTRONG sponsors helpful literature to patients to help guide them and their families through this tough time. They also sponsor continuing education for the hospital's staff. If you or someone you know is diagnosed, the resources found in the following link can help them face the challenges of cancer, head on, and live life on their own terms. Livestrong.org/get-help
Please support me as I make a difference in the cancer fight through my participation in Team LIVESTRONG. Thank you! Hope to see you out there running or cheering on November 3rd!
